How do I apply for my Texas LTC? What is the typical cost?
For the average person, the cost is about $40 for licensing and $10 for fingerprinting, but there are discounts available for seniors, current and former military, and others in civil service. Compile ALL of the documents that verify your eligibility when you apply, then visit the application page at https://txapps.texas.gov/txapp/txdps/ltc/
If I qualify with a revolver, is that all I'm allowed to carry?
No, the State of Texas no longer has that rule for LTC holders.
We do, however, suggest that you use a semi-auto for qualification, as there are exercises in the course of fire that require 10 rounds and have time constraints.
What type of firearm and ammunition should I purchase for carry?
Firearms for daily carry require you to consider several factors. While caliber is an important consideration, we suggest taking into account size, comfortable concealment, accessory availability and, most important, do you shoot it well? For ammunition, research ballistic info and consider carrying ammunition similar to local law enforcement. Never carry target ammunition for defensive use, and always thoroughly test any new ammunition in the firearm
to confirm reliable operation.
Am I allowed to carry in other states?
Yes, with certain restrictions. Texas shares reciprocity with several other states around the country, but it's important to know the laws of the state you are visiting. Remember, you must comply with the laws of the state you are in, not just the one you are from. The consequences can be very severe.
Check reciprocity here:

Am I required to take the class before I apply?
No, we actually suggest getting your application started as soon as you book your class. A completed application will expire after 90 days, so make sure that your class is scheduled within that time.
Are there handgun caliber requirements for qualifying or daily carry?
No. The State of Texas removed the minimum caliber requirement for qualification. There has never been a restriction or requirement for daily carry.
What should I practice on for my shooting qualification?
The course of fire for certification is very basic. Students fire a total of 50 rounds; 20 from 3 yards, 20 from 7 yards, 10 from 15 yards. The targets that are required are B-27 silhouettes and are available at most ranges
Is there a separate license for concealed carry vs. open carry?
No, the Texas License to Carry covers both options. If you plan to carry openly, remember that holsters must be hip/belt holsters or shoulder holsters. No other methods of open carry are allowed.
We do suggest, with all methods of carry, consult a competent firearms trainer and practice with your holster. Your life depends on it!
I've already taken my course and my shooting qualification.
How long is my LTC-100 valid?
The certificate you receive from your instructor is valid for 2 years from the date of completion. You must qualify on both the written and shooting portions and they must be signed by a licensed instructor to be valid.
I'm licensed in another state, but I recently relocated to Texas.
Can my license be transferred?
No. The laws of each state may be similar, but the State of Texas requires that you are properly informed of the legal requirements for licensees, therefore you are required to take a class for licensing.
I took the online course. How do I complete the range portion?
The range requirement for your online certification is 1-2 hours of in-person instruction with a Texas Qualified LTC instructor and a standard handgun qualification test.
