New regulations for Level 3 officers!
As of January 1, 2024, ALL level 3 and 4 officers are required to complete the MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory). This requirement covers both new licenses AND renewals. We recommend Fort Worth PsychWorks, but any licensed psychologist that provides the approved test format may be used.
What does it cost to apply for my security license?
Fees can be different from person to person. Standard fees are:
Level 2/unarmed/non-commissioned $37
Level 3/armed/commissioned $57
Level 4/PPO/bodyguard $57
These are typical state fees only and they do not include fingerprinting or any employer fees.
Discounts for military, their spouses, and law enforcement are also available.
I have a conviction on my record. Can I qualify for a security license?
With certain offenses, eligibility may vary greatly, but a conviction does not immediately disqualify a person for licensing. Applicants are encouraged to read TAC 35.4 very thoroughly and be prepared to supply court documents regarding the disposition and circumstances of your case.
If I qualify with a revolver, is that all I'm allowed to carry?
For commissioned/armed security officers, the answer is yes. Because of this requirement, we suggest that you qualify using a semi-auto, as there are exercises in the course of fire that require 10 rounds and have time constraints.
I'm a Level 3 officer. Does that allow me to carry a concealed firearm?
No. A level 3 officer is only allowed to carry a firearm while in uniform and on duty, and the firearm must be carried in a secure holster attached to their duty belt and openly displayed. We suggest the use of a law enforcement grade holster, such as the Safariland ALS.
I'm a Level 3 officer and I'm considering adding Level 4. What are the requirements?
Level 4 officers must have current Level 2 AND 3 license training in order to qualify for PPO certification. Candidates must also complete the MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) with a licensed psychologist to qualify for licensure. It's also recommended that candidates have a valid Texas LTC for carrying a firearm while doing plainclothes close protection.
How long does it take to get my pocket card?
Pocket cards are typically received very quickly, but the DPS reminds applicants to allow up to 60 days. It's also important to remember that pocket cards will not be issued until the applicant affiliates with a security company. Check with your hiring manager/HR person for details regarding hiring and affiliation.
Can my License to Carry be used as a security license?
No, the Texas License to Carry is not an occupational permit. Security personnel are required to have a Texas Level 3 or 4 security license and must have their pocket card on their person at all times while they are working.
What should I practice on for my shooting qualifications?
The course of fire for certification is very basic. Students fire a total of 50 rounds; 20 from 3 yards, 20 from 7 yards, 10 from 15 yards. Shotgun certification is optional, but the requirements include 10 rounds for new licensees, 6 rounds for requalifying officers. The targets that are required are B-27 silhouettes and are available at most ranges.
Is my security license valid in other states? Is my out-of-state security license valid in Texas?
No. All states require security officers to be trained and licensed on their individual laws and statutes.
What type of firearm should I carry?
There are a number of important factors to consider when purchasing a duty firearm. We suggest prioritizing based off of a few simple standards: Is the firearm you're purchasing a quality brand name? Is it a caliber that allows you to train, both from a cost and availability standpoint, as well as having good performance for duty or defensive use? Are there parts, accessories, and QUALITY holsters readily available at a reasonable cost?
What ammunition and defensive equipment should I use?
Our advice is to find out what your local police department requires officers to carry. This is a good strategy across all platforms of defensive tools, including OC spray, batons, handcuffs, belts, and ammunition.
